morning in the park

morning in the park
a sudden sun rescinds
waking dreams i had in winter
while on a summer wind

the warbling of vireo
and poplar seeds like snow
weightless and ethereal
float with me as i go

past the pine grove in the pasture
where in a city glade
of bending stems and lion's teeth
sheep’s heads bob and graze

and here below the swaying elm
my doldrums i will sow
so that perhaps ‘fore winter’s frost
a sweeter fruit may grow

and in the shade i’ll lie a while
and watch the clouds pass over,
my fingers between the blades of grass,
my thoughts amid the clovers.
